Service Provider Series: Managing the IPv6 Migration

The demand for the internet is overwhelming and IP address availability is becoming more limited. IPv6 fixes the problem but migrating from the current standard of IPv4 can't happen overnight. F5 has a solution that allows both IPv4 and IPv6 to work simultaneously during the migration without causing an interruption to your services or more importantly, your customers. By using BIG-IP® Local Traffic Manager ™(LTM) you can: • create an IPv6 DNS entry for your F5 LTM that compliments your IPv4 DNS entry • access your network with either IPv6 or IPv4 and still get to any of your backend servers • enable live sessions between customer devices and back-end core services The following video in the Service Provider Series explains the necessity of switching from IPv4 to IPv6 and how F5 can help manage the migration using BIG-IP LTM. Computer Network Terms Explained

If networking terms puzzle you, this should hopefully explain some of the main ones. ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, is the most popular form of internet connection in the UK IP Transit - internet transit hosted by an ISP. Atom - similar to RSS but is newer and offers a greater range of facilities. Still in development, but catching on. The technology is based on RSS. Bandwidth - the total of information you can send through a connection. Bandwidth is generally measured in megabits per second. Blog - similar to an online journal where a person or society may publish its thoughts or opinions, but can also publish facts. Often updated at least once a week and ordinarily roughly daily and is arranged chronologically in order. Broadband refers to a connection which has more bandwidth than a modem, and tends to be a very generic term with no specific speed attached to it, but will always mean a connection to the internet rather than LAN connection. Co-Location is where...

CCNA ? CCNP Training ? IPv6 Addressing

As a CCNA / CCNP candidate you are expected to understand IPv6 During your career as a Cisco network engineer you will have to deal understanding IPv6 address structure. For your CCNA and CCNP studies you have to at some point confront and understand IPv6. At first glance it can see quite daunting compared to IPv4 that we are all used to, in actual fact IPv6 is quite a simply addressing protocol once you get past the initial shock. In this article we are going to have a look at Neighbour discovery protocol for layer 2 mapping. When an IPv6 host or router needs to send a packet to some other host on the same network it will first of all look into it's own local neighbour database to find if it has an IPv6 to MAC mapping, if it finds the right mapping the host will use it, if there is no mapping the host will need to resolve the known layer 3 IPv6 address to a currently unknown Layer 2 MAC address and to do this the host uses the Neighbor Discovery Protocol or NDP to discover ...

The Basics of IPv6 Tunneling

Article by Jeffhardy Looking online is also a great way to understand more about the IPv6 tunneling process. This gives a complete explanation on the process. As the internet infrastructure migrates from the IPv4 version to the latest IPv6 version, more and more web traffic can be carried through the tunnel. IPv6 is also a long anticipated version. The older version IPv4 was sing the thirty two bit addresses, which was able to support around 4.3 billion devices that were connected to the internet directly. On the other hand, the IPv6 version comes with the one hundred and twenty eight bit addresses that will be able to support virtually unlimited numerous devices. IPv6 tunneling is also considered to be very advanced and efficient when compared to other versions. Due to the amazing features and factors of the latest IPv6, a lot of internet management companies and groups are using this version these days. This content will provide some information on the basics that one shoul...

IP Address

Article by John Brown IP stands for Internet Protocol, therefore an IP address is a unique number used by network equipment in order to communicate and interfere between them using the IP standard. In a network, each node in the network must have its own unique address in order to distinguish itself from the others. If you wish, the IP address can be associated to some other unique identifier in real life - for example the street name or a person's phone number. In the same way that a phone number points to a person, an IP address points to a specific node inside a network. IP addresses are created by IANA (the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) and they're all under its management. IANA is the top level management institution. It usually allocates super-blocks to Regional Internet Registries, who in turn allocate smaller blocks to ISP's and other enterprises. The ISP's distribute individual IP addresses or subnets to their clients. Currently, the Internet P...

What is Zero Configuration Networking?

Article by Dwssruthi Basically, the zero configuration networking is a group of techniques which by itself creates a usable IP network without the need of the manual intervention or the special configuration servers. The ZCN which is nothing but it allows the users who are new to the system or not the experts to connect the computers like networked printers or even the other network devices can be established to work within the network automatically. Without the Zero configuration user will have to set up the special services like the DHCP and the DNS or else the computer network settings have to be setted up manually which may be difficult for the new users or the non technical users.Basically, the Zeroconf is built on three core technologies, one is the automation resolution and the distribution of the computer hostnames which is in other words we call the multi cast DNS or the automatic location of the network services like printer devices through the service discovery or ...

Are We Running Out of Room on the Internet?

Article by William Huebner A recent news report snagged my attention and spurred me to find out more about running out of room on the internet. In an interview with Sam Bucholtz the co-founder of Casaba Security (a team of security pioneers who research, develop and implement solutions to internet security problems), he told viewers that reports that we are getting very close to running out of addresses for all the mobile devices we are now using is true. The use of cell phones, Blackberries, iPads, iPods, laptop computers and all the other devices that we want to connect with the internet, has gotten us to the point that there are only about 2% of the potential addresses under the current internet protocol still available. So we are running out of room on the internet. Internet addresses are needed to allow all these devices to talk with one another. The current internet protocol is based on a 32bit value which limits the total number of devices that can "talk" or ...

If no transition technologies are available, DirectAccess can use IP over HTTPS. If your computer has a public IPv4 address, DirectAccess will attempt to create a connection using 6to4. If this fails, remember that 6to4 does not su...
