IPv6 is coming

Article by David Jones The potaroo website publishes a report, generated daily, regarding the availability and predicted exhaustion of IPv4 space. The report contains several graphs highlighting the history of address allocations, allocation rates over time, projected allocations and projected address exhaustion dates. These graphs are reported from the perspective of IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) and the RIRs (Regional Internet Registries). IANA serves essentially as the top of the IP food chain in allocating to RIRs from its pool of address space. Each of the RIRs then in turn allocates from its respective address space to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and in some cases, legacy address space holders whove historically obtained address space directly from Network Information Centers (NICs) which preceded RIRs. This is why the report indicates IANA running out of space first, followed within about a year of the RIRs running out. When IANA allocates its last b...

IPv6, what it is, what it does, and how it helps.

Article by Nathan Zero The Point of IPv6 Probably the most advertised feature of IPv6 may be the larger address space. If you've read anything about IPv6, the chances are you realize that it increases the address size from 32 bits to 128. This is ample for everyone ever born to possess a private network bigger than the present Internet. Even if all you own (including stuff that don't contain any electronics) had its own IPv6 address, you would then still not be exceeding a little fraction of the address space. This really is quite important since it could make routing easier. Routers typically connect a relatively small number of networks together. The simplest case is the home router, which connects your local network to the Internet. For every packet it receives, it has to do among three things: drop it, forward it to the internal network, or forward it to the external network. For a typical home network, this really is quite a simple decision: When the destination ...

Amadeus Consulting Discusses World IPv6 Day Today: Help Test the Future

Help Test the Future: World IPv6 Day is Today For a very small percentage of users June 8, 2011 is going to be a bad day on the Internet. In fact, approximately .5% of users may not be able to access popular websites like Google and Facebook, so you may see a lot of comments that "Facebook is down," or "Twitter is not working."   But for the other 99.5% of internet users, today will be just like any other day. Except of course, you are helping stress-test the future of the Internet. Pretty exciting!   What is IPv6?   The Internet has its own addressing system that gives each connected device or network its own unique address. This is how a computer in the US knows how to find a website that is hosted in Germany, for example. This addressing system is called IPv4.   Whenever you type in an address, say http://www.AmadeusConsulting.com, your computer automatically translates that into an IPv4 address that looks like 174.129.15.91.   However, IPv4 was de...
