What is Zero Configuration Networking?

Basically, the zero configuration networking is a group of techniques which by itself creates a usable IP network without the need of the manual intervention or the special configuration servers. The ZCN which is nothing but it allows the users who are new to the system or not the experts to connect the computers like networked printers or even the other network devices can be established to work within the network automatically. Without the Zero configuration user will have to set up the special services like the DHCP and the DNS or else the computer network settings have to be setted up manually which may be difficult for the new users or the non technical users.

Basically, the Zeroconf is built on three core technologies, one is the automation resolution and the distribution of the computer hostnames which is in other words we call the multi cast DNS or the automatic location of the network services like printer devices through the service discovery or the assignment of the many numbered network addresses which can be used for the networked devices.

Both the IP versions that are IPv4 and the IPv6 versions come with the standard methods for the address configuration, like for the link local addressing the IPv4 uses the special block of 169.254.0.0/16 as mentioned in the RFC 3927 while the IPv6 uses the prefix of fe80::/16.

Actually, most of the IPv4 hosts use the link local addressing which only resort when the DHCP server is unavailable otherwise the IPv4 host uses the DHCP assigned address so that all the communication needs be it global or even the local. The main reason on IPv4 hosts are not required is because it supports multiple address per interface although many others too come with such capability and also the IPv4 host enforces the distributed kind of resolution like in the case of the multicast DNS so that the auto configured link local address of another host on the network can be very difficult.

The DNS servers that are automatically updated with DHCP-assigned host and address information.

Since the IPv6 hosts are required to support the multiple addresses per interface, almost every IPv6 host configures a local link address even when the global addresses are available. Both IP versions that are IPv4 and IPv6 hosts randomly generate the host-specific part of an auto configured address.
